Use the worksheet from in class to guide you through these exercises. The linear approximation is computed using the formula we wrote down for f(x)\approx .

1. Let f(x)=\sqrt{x}. Compute the linear approximation at a=9 and use it to approximate \sqrt{10} (i.e. f(10)).
2. Let f(x)=\sqrt{x}. Compute the linear approximation at a=17 and use it to approximate \sqrt{17} (i.e. f(17)).
3. Let f(x)=\sqrt[3]{x}. Compute the linear approximation at a=8 and use it to approximate \sqrt[3]{7.8} (i.e. f(7.8)).
4. Let f(x)=\sqrt[4]{x}. Compute the linear approximation at a=81 and use it to approximate \sqrt[4]{81.4} (i.e. f(81.4)).
5. Find a linear approximation for f(x)=x+\frac{2}{x} at a=1. Use it to approximate f(1.04).
6. Find a linear approximation for f(x)=\frac{3}{x-1} at a=4. Use it to approximate f(3). Is this approximation a good one? Explain your answer.

The problems above are very similar to the following problems in the textbook (respectively): 19, 20, 23, 24, 9, 10.

Limits Online Activity

Here are some links for the Limits online activity that we looked at in class today.

Here is a link for more online activities that may be useful to you as we continue in this course.

Also, you can look around at the rest of that website.  It is based on the Elements of Calculus I course that is taught at Notre Dame.  Our course is very similar to it, but does not go in exactly the same order or at exactly the same pace.  I just happen to know about the website, because I helped develop it.

Function: Jersey Number to Player Name

What if two players on the team had the same name?

What if two players on the team wore the same jersey number?

What is the domain of the function?

What is the range?

I’m looking forward to meeting all of you next Monday.  I’ll be using this website to keep you up to date on developments in the course.  This website also includes important course documents like the course syllabus and the list of assignments.

Please feel free to come see me as the semester progresses.  I welcome your questions and am looking forward to working with each of you!
